Green Grass

It was a mid-summer Sunday of May,and I could feel the heat waves flying off the white plaster of the building, through the window, despite being strategically placed under the direct draft of the two tonne air-conditioner.
And it wasn’t because I was so deeply interested on the other side of the tinted glass, but because I couldn’t care less for the proceedings on my side.
We were one hour into the “Sunday special” lecture of Organic chemistry and there were 5 more to go!
Our teacher, who was superhumanly good in memorising all hydrocarbons, also had an M.Phil, who knows why and hence was the most captivating of the speakers amongst the many engineers who would otherwise take our classes.

His class was always full of weird facts and untimed cheesy jokes which only he could pull off !
One such line of his still rings in my head,for I turned and stopped looking at the white building when he said “Har Ek ko Dusre ki biwi achi lagti hai!”{every married person thinks the other one got the better deal !}

There was a roar of laughter , I do not recall the question that led to this, as these sessions were full of random questions followed by his logical explanations and a silly joke ! But for some reason this one stuck in my head
and at some point later while I was preparing for a debate, I found myself comparing it to a phrase in English “Grass is always Greener on the other side”.
The two can be indispensably used in each others place and the sentence would still sound the same,
but look closely and there just might be a funny little life lesson here!

Today as I sit away from home, typing this ,just before going out for sailing ,I can’t help but think of being back in my hometown just to bunk a class and go to the fort with my buddies and be back home for Mom’s chicken curry and Netflix.
I am also pretty sure my friend back home would readily swap in to visit the backwaters ,then play some hockey before the five-course dinner.
So yeah I guess he was right ‘Dusre ki biwi achi lagti hai’ !
but whats hidden here is the key to realize that ‘dusre ki biwi achi lagti hai ‘ naturally implies
‘khudki hote hue’{you’d compare to other’s spouse, only if you are married in the first place} and no matter how much you joke around about it , you know it !
that you would never want to wake up to see any other face :)
Even though we complain about what we do at some point of time or the other , I’m pretty confident and not just speaking for myself, that whatever ‘we choose’ to do in life can very well be the best thing for us and none of us would become the same without the choices that we make, and these stick with us as the most rewarding, even though it costs us our comfort zone, but it never surpasses that satisfaction ,that feeling of accomplishment when you kick back and look over.
Safe to say then that the grass is never really greener on the other side and even if it ever might seem so, remember its freakin golden on this side, other than being green for someone else obviously!

There is as much behind you as there is ahead.
